Thought we could open a new thread here. As this performance was considered to be a new direction for the Eagles, it's received a lot of critical attention, some good, some bad. I saw it, and I liked it. What did you think?
To me, the band was musically stripped down, well-rehearsed, looked great (Walsh gets considerable props!) and, considering some of the audio problems on the live feed, sounded good as well. They were obviously a little on edge, which added to the performance.
Reports from those in attendance are very favorable, i.e. the standing o was spontaneous, the house mix was better than the audio feed, the band was observed backstage after the song, and seemed relaxed as they parted ways - nobody was mad, or whatever. |

Kick Ass Song!! Welcome to the Hotel TheyStillGotItfornia!
I missed the actual broadcast so I've only seen the clip on my laptop. Vince Gill as always was very classy with his intro. They did seem a little on edge but I thought they did a fabulous job.
I'm a little bummed though that this is their final album - even though I knew it probably was. I just finished reading Clapton's book and he is pretty sure he's done touring. I'm going to Elton's show on Saturday wondering if this is the last time I'll see him in concert.
Where will the music come from when they all hang up their microphones? |

I also saw the online clip as the CMA's are not on TV in UK until tomorrow night. Liked the performance as well. As it's already been mentioned, they looked and sounded great despite perhaps seeming a little on edge. Nice job! _________________ Be young, be foolish, be happy. |

Elliot Schiener (who has worked with Glenn on many projects) sent this email to Lefsetz, explaining the audio situation:
"Hi Bob....This is Elliot Scheiner. I mixed the new Eagles record. Just wanted to confirm if there was any doubt that the Eagles were playing live last night. I mixed their performance and yes it did sound different. I approach mixing for TV differently than most TV mixers. The rest of the show was mixed by John Harris and Jay Vicari. I hope the difference in sound in their performance was a good thing.
Regards,
Elliot Scheiner" |

As did I. And although the sound was different from the album, I didn't think much of it, because I do know that mixing live is vastly different from what can happen in a studio. _________________ I tried being good, but I got bored.

I got a chuckle out of this post made on a blog "elsewhere." There's all these know-almost-nothings, probably listening to this mix on very inadequate TV speakers, pontificating about the sound quality, without knowing ANYTHING about it, plus bleating on as if somehow their opinion matters. Then this post shows up:
"I was the audio guy for the CMAs, and all of you people can SUCK IT."
Amen, brother. |

Eagles on the CMAs....home run by all accounts that matter. Perfect song, dual lead vocals, group harmonies, country chart song, classic “Eagles” country rock sound, PERFECT TIMING AND SYNERGY with other events and other news unfolding.
The die-hard fans are spoiled by the normally pristine conditions that the Eagles perform under. Neither the mix nor the singing was not THAT bad for 100 percent live, no warm-up song, alternating stage setups, four EQUAL vocals. It had nothing to do with not being prepared or nerves or whatever. It’s LIVE.
The rest of the show did NOT have a TV mixing problem, either. It was obvious to me that several of the performers were having trouble with their vocal monitoring. Taylor Swift was off pitch and tight and clearly struggling to hear herself properly. Several others, also. Even George Strait was not “on” it. Pickler pulled out one of her in-ear monitors during her performance, dead give away that she was trying to hear more ambient sound rather than direct monitor sound. |

I really liked it too. I've spent some of my life around live television production, which included bands, etc., and mixing a bunch of instruments live to 2-track audio feed is a skill in itself. We used to take the live music and run it into a 16-track mixing board, and that would be mixed down and sent to the audio feed.
My only criticism of the sound - I was listening through the pretty adequate speakers in my high-def flat panel - was that the drums were a bit 'flappy' sounding, but the bass speakers in the TV are bottom-end sensitive.
Nobody looked mad to me - they just seemed focused on trying to hear, and also doing a relatively new song for them. The Eagles have never been known for stage antics. Rolling Stone noted that they tended to loiter on stage - someone has remarked that watching them is like watching paint dry. Linda Ronstadt was the same. She'd come out and just stand in front of the mic and sing. Now and then she'd put her hand on the mic, or look downwards, but that was the limit of emoting for her. She let her voice do the work. It's more about the quality of the music than a lot of prancing about.
I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I heard from someone who was sitting in an area that overlooked part of backstage, where the artists were going on and off stage. The Eagles came off, seemed friendly towards each other, and also seemed quite pleased with the way things went, judging by the body language. Would they ever do this again? Probably not. |

Great show to watch and listen to. What a huge arena - must be a 20 thousand seater. Highlights for me were the Reba McEntire/ LeAnn Rimes duet, the Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles and that marching band trombone player who ended up dancing like crazy on stage next to one of Brad Paisley's 'babes' . Eagles were OK as they tried to live up to their almost deiform introduction. Although they were not in their comfort zone and looked incredibly ancient compared to everyone else there How Long certainly looked and sounded right in the evening's Country music scene. I counted 5 people out front and four at the back and Soda up above _________________ Taking one day at a time means not having to worry about all of next week! |

However, with the exception of Mr. Crago, who was omnipresent in the mix, almost to the exclusion of the vocals, what were the three keyboard players actually DOING? I couldn't hear them, Soda couldn't hear them, and only the grand piano has been reported as audible, and only in surround sound.
No doubt, after I was informed what shots to look at by TG, that there were four guys on the backline. However, it sounded like guitars and drums. I couldn't even hear the bass. |
