Our House – Finally!

Words cannot describe the emotions I was feeling yesterday evening as I waited for C, S and N to take to the stage. 8 and 30 years I had waited for this moment, to experience this band live for the very first time since hearing their music on a pirated cassette tape in Saudi Arabia back in 1971 and thinking ‘wow, music doesn’t get much better than this!’ And now I was privileged to be sitting here in the best seat in the house, front row centre, in Nash’s boyhood home town of Manchester and they were going to be playing just for me! I imagine there must have been a similar level of anticipation whilst waiting to hear their initial jamming session at Mama Cass’ house up in Laurel Canyon all those years ago.

A simple backdrop of a white CSN band logo against a black curtain set the scene as they walked into view. Dressed casually in black shirts and jeans came first David Crosby, a teddy bear with a permanent grin and a baseball cap shielding those eyes still dancing with mischief, then the silver-topped but ever youthful Graham Nash and, finally, the mad axeman Stephen Stills.

There then followed 2 and ½ hours of pure musical heaven. A carefully chosen mixture of Buffalo Springfield and CSN compositions, together with covers of songs by various other artists, showed off their vocal harmonies and musicianship to perfection. Their relaxed and easy going connection with each other on stage was apparent from the start and it was clear that they were out to enjoy themselves as well. This concert was always going to be a little bit special because of the ‘local boy makes good’ connection and some additional Nash songs like Cold Rain and Just A Song were deliberately included in the first set, at the expense of the expected cover of Grateful Dead’s Uncle John’s Band.

Graham welcomed his sister, his photographic mentor and a representative of his old local boys’ club who were ‘all somewhere in the audience’. The seriousness of the messages behind some of the social commentary songs like Cold Rain and Military Madness was balanced by the verbal joshing with each other/the audience and added to the intimacy of the event. The first set comprised mostly 'wooden music'. ‘Rock and Roll!’ demanded someone from the audience – ‘Saved my ass!’ quipped Graham Nash and their first set closer Southern Cross provided a fitting taster for a much livelier second half.

The whole evening was unforgettable but notable highlights for me were the singalong to Our House, the extended version of Deja Vu which allowed each band member to demonstrate their instrumental prowess to the full and David’s remodelled version of Almost Cut My Hair which happened to occur at exactly the same point in the set as someone in the audience requested it. ‘OK - we’ll play the bloody thing!’ retorted Graham. Priceless timing!

Forget the fact that Stephen can’t quite sing as well as the others, his guitar playing is immaculate; this is where he belongs; this is his home. Forget the fact also that the band is deliberately trialling these song covers ahead of a new ‘covers’ album to be released in the near future instead of playing everything from their own back catalogue. CSN are still magical together and, in my opinion, without equal as a harmony ensemble. Eagles and Neil Young eat your hearts out! Once is not enough; I want to go again. Their music is timeless but I can’t wait another 38 years!

Wonderful review, WB! Felt like I was there. Sounds like a great night and that it was well worth the 38 year wait. Cool

Bob Glaub on bass?

Well, it sounds like a good time was had by all and I hope they're making a DVD, because I love this set.

One of the first rock concerts I snuck into was in Guildford at the Odeon. The Stones and the Hollies. The place was sold out, but I lucked into a seat that had no seat, but at least arms, so I hunkered down. The Hollies had just released "I Can't Let Go," as a single. When Graham hit the high note, my hair stood on end!

The bassist was introduced as being from Stockport originally - another local boy but I didn't quite catch the name.

That Hollies clip takes me back a bit as well Laughing They were up there with the best of them Wink

John Densmore of the Doors (drummer) also suffered from tinnitus. It can be treated. John is now out and about playing again. I post to his board - he actually does join in now and then, and I know he reads things if nothing else. So I mentioned Steven's tinnitus to him. We'll see what happens.

Really? How? I have tinnitus in both ears, but especially the right one.

Well, first by consulting an ENT specialist? There also seem to be various remedies available, which I'd be prone to check out. It can resolve on its own. http://www.medicinenet.com/tinnitus/article.htm

I asked John on the board what he'd been doing, but he's finishing up writing his second book and gigging as well, so I don't know how long he'll take to respond.

I can't imagine living with such an annoying problem myself, which is why I was so careful to protect my hearing during the time I was subjected to loud music on a regular basis. When we were mixing in the studio, everything was turned waaaay down, for example. You can't really hear anything when things are loud anyway.

I didn't know that there was anything they could do for it. The last time I went to an ENT, I was told that I just have to live with it. I might try cutting down more on my salt and caffeine intake and see if that helps a little. Thanks for the info, mews. :D

Summer Tour dates 2010 now posted on the CSN website. London is do-able for me, maybe, if I can sleep on my son's floor but I would prefer a closer venue. How can I find out if there are any other UK venues/dates planned, or is it just a case of wait and pray?
